What are Captions?

Captioning is the display of written text on a TV or movie screen that represents the dialogue, narration and sound-effects of the visual media.

Captions can be accessed by anyone free of charge anywhere in Australia using a digital TV, digital set top box or an analogue teletext TV.

Red Bee Media is the largest provider of captioning services in Australia.

Every year in Australia, we deliver more than 20,000 hours of captions on behalf of our Free-to-Air TV Network Clients – Channel Seven, Nine, Ten and SBS.  We also produce thousands more hours of captions for Subscription TV channels such as Showtime, Showcase and Discovery, and thousands of TV Commercials.

Why caption?

The Broadcast Services Act (BSA) and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) apply certain quotas under government legislation that Free and Subscription TV Networks must deliver to meet their broadcast licence conditions.

Captions are used by more than 3.5 million Australians who suffer from some degree of hearing loss, and who still want to enjoy watching television like everyone else.

Captions are also used by people learning to speak English, and people viewing programs in noisy or public areas such as shopping centres, gyms and airports.
