Audio Description

Audio description is a language option on DVDs that verbally describes what is happening on screen. Settings, costumes, body language and other important visual clues are described as part of the soundtrack.

Audio description has many technological aspects that are similar to captioning and Red Bee Media Australia has exploited its experience in captioning in the establishment of its audio description facility.

DVD is the perfect medium for audio description because:

  • One DVD can hold up to 26 different soundtracks for each program and AD is located on one of these tracks.
  • No special equipment other than a standard DVD player is required for accessing the AD track.
  • Only one master disc needs to be held by the distributors.
  • DVD offers the best opportunity for national and unrestricted access to AD in commercial video stores and retailers.
  • The RBMA has longstanding partnerships with major DVD distributors in Australia.

Red Bee Media Australia has extensive experience in working with people to create a product that is of the highest quality and best suited to the needs and wishes of the end-users. Throughout the pilot project for audio description on DVD the RBMA consulted with a group of delegates from Blind Citzens Australia and various other representative bodies to assist with education campaigns for both the industry and the community. This group in turn consulted with blind and vision impaired people to create AD standards that meet the needs of as many end-users as possible.

If you want your product to reach a wider market, why not ask Red Bee Media Australia to audio describe it?
